This painting proved to me that it's important to try new things. A gallery whose shows I frequently participate in put out a call for "Art in Action," meaning sports. I have never painted anything related to sports. In fact, I have never painted a realistic picture of a person. But I decided to rise to the challenge. What I came up with was this picture of a runner's legs, done in mixed media.
I didn't know quite what to make of it. I thought it came out pretty good, but I also thought it was kind of odd. Who would want such a thing? While I was pondering this question, the gallery revised its call to include paintings that simply suggested action or movement. That I could come up with! I immediately entered the three abstract paintings below, which I felt fit the bill nicely.
Shown above: Pinot Noir, Burgundy, Zinfandel, acrylic, each 20 in x 20 in
What to do with the odd runner painting? Without much thought I popped it up on Instagram. An hour later it was sold. One of my Instagram followers saw it and decided it would be the perfect gift for his son, an avid runner.
Moral of the story: Try new things!
