"Diffusion," the latest painting to come off my easel, is my twist on the classic cruciform, or cross, composition. In this painting, I experimented with layering and textures, using stamps and stencils to add combine and enhance colors. Sometimes I scrubbed paint, scraping to bring out the colors underneath. Other times I used a technique I call "reverse scumbling," in which I drag bright color over a duller color in order to set up a "vibration" effect of the two or more colors working together. I wanted this one to really pop, so some of the paints used are fluorescent.
I combined hot and cold colors in this painting, in shades of magenta, fuchsia, orange, blues, greens and violets. Arms of magenta, hot pink and hot orange reach out as if dissolving in the cool blues and greens…like a neon sign underwater. My intention was for the rich tones and intricate detail of this painting to add excitement to a room.
